On a whim after walking the dog at our favourite beach Steve suggested that we go to the Butt of Lewis with my parents, normally this area is quite wild, with waves crashing on the cliffs, a good selection of sea birds to watch and the most north-westerly point on the island (and the UK?)

Today it was very calm and not a lot happening – as I was gazing out to sea i saw a fin and then another and then appeared a pod of 6 whales – at the time we did not know what type – and we watched them swim round the Butt for about 15 mins – it was amazing! We could not believe our luck – we have gazed longingly at the sea many times in the past in the hope of seeing a minke whale but we never expected to see this beautiful sight.

When we got home we tried to identify them and after a few phone calls we confirmed that they were indeed KILLER whales!!

And can you believe it was one of the few times we did not have our cameras
